Change: The Conversation - Episode 6 - The power of storytelling in change management sustainability
In the third episode of the series on embedded change and change momentum, Natalia and Melanie McLagan break down the impact of storytelling in developing strong change momentum. Change Management is more than just top-down planning and execution -- connecting with people requires storytelling and making change meaningful and relatable for the people affected. What makes a good story for change is that it is based on the experiences of people involved. We describe how storytelling is a key tool for change champions and helps people relate to the change. We tell a few stories from the trenches about how we've encountered, developed and used stories as a powerful tool to bring about change. We talk about how compelling, actionable and relatable stories are the key to creating a desire for change and momentum towards the future state.
In Episode 5, Natalia and Melanie McLagan talk about the power of formal and information social networks within organizations that drive the success of change initiatives. Using change champions who have strong relationships and networks in creating change momentum is what makes change successful. We break down who makes an ideal change champion, and how cultural leaders lead beyond their positions. Melanie talks about her experience leading in Lean and how the principles of Lean and Lean for service create trust, going to where the work is being done, and not focusing on how well people perform in their roles. When looking for opportunities to spark transformation and change, trust and the harnessing of social networks are two key areas that will impact success.
In Episode 4, Natalia is joined by Melanie McLagan for a series of conversations on embedded change and the difference between change management and change momentum. How do we create change momentum in organizations to bring about lasting and sustainable change? Often strategic planning and other initiatives bring to light that change needs to happen. So, when the intention of change is clear, we can create strong momentum with the people who need to make the changes real. Hear from two experts on how we make the future state meaningful for people in organizations, link it to an agile approach and how change can be responsive and iterative to create great value for people, leaders and organizations.
